Theme and Variation

Theme and Variation is a style of music in which a composer (someone who writes music) takes a tune or theme and  repeats it several different ways. Many composers wrote pieces which are examples of Theme and Variations. Sometimes the theme is one they made up, at other times they took a theme that another composer had already written and then made variations on it. This week we are going to listen to Charles Ives Theme and Variations on America!

Listen:

Listen to Charles Ives Variations on America while completing the Google Form below. Turn on the recording and immediately scroll down to Variation Number 1.  Fill in your response as the music is playing.

Please think about the TEMPO (speed) and DYNAMICS(volume) and the INSTRUMENTS you hear as you listen to this piece of music. Think about how these qualities of music HELP YOU MAKE A CONNECTION TO THE PIECE.
What about the music makes you feel or think a certain way? When you listen, are you reminded of something?
Respond while listening to each variation. If you miss a variation, continue on to the next one. Your answers do not have to be full sentences.
HAPPY LISTENING!
