WRITERS' WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Session 1 Writing for Readers

Students will look back at their writing folder filled with booklets from previous units, reading over their writing. They’ll make two piles: one that is easy to read and one that is hard to read, noticing differences. Then they will likely start a new true story from their life, thinking about ways to make it easy to read.

Unit 2 Session 10: Writers Use What They Know About Letters to Label Their Writing

Today your kids will help label items in another student’s writing, listening and recording more sounds in the words. They will use the alphabet chart when needed. Then, they’ll take a piece of writing from their writing folder and make sure they’ve included letters and sounds in their writing, adding more labels and possibly even sentences.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Lesson 2: How to Write True Stories That Readers Really Want to Read

Today your students will follow the familiar steps of writing a personal narrative by coming up with an idea, telling the story across pages, and then writing and drawing the story. They might include speech bubbles in their writing, using a previously taught strategy to bring their writing to life. Some may even write two or three stories today.

READERS' WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Session 2: Super Readers Use Pointer Power to Check Their Reading, Making Sure What They Say Matches What They See

Today your students will learn that when there are lots of words and longer words they need to check their reading to make sure each word only gets one tap. They will find something to act as their pointer, a popsicle stick, their finger, a pencil or even the cursor on their computer to make sure what they are saying matches what is on the page. Expect students to do this with 5 to 6 books depending on the length of each book and their stamina which should be around 10-15 minutes at this point in the year.

Unit 2 Session 11: Learning New Snap Words

Today your kids will learn three new snap words (this, here and is) as they practice a five-step process for turning any word into a snap word. Then, they’ll use the snap words they’ve learned to make and read simple phrases and sentences in their own writing.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Lesson 3: Drawing Stories for Readers

Today your students will write more stories, drawing detailed pictures and telling the story out loud as they go. Then, they’ll reread and look back at the pictures as they say the story aloud to make sure they are writing words that match the pictures.

READERS' WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Session 3: Readers Don’t Let Longer Words Slow Them Down: Every Word Gets One Tap

Today your students will practice using their pointer power on songs, poems, books in their hands or books on the computer. Expect the same volume as yesterday, although some of the volume of reading may come in the form of rereading to make it match! They will be on the look-out for long words that might try to trick them into pointing too many times for one single word. Your readers will need to pay attention to when their pointer power loses strength, when it doesn’t match, and will need to go back to try again. They will need to keep the mantra in their head that every word—even long ones-only get one tap!

Unit 2 Session 12: Listening to the Ends of Words Matter

Today your students will help you add more letters to existing labels by really listening for the last sound. Then, they’ll look around the place where they are learning, find objects to label, and then listen to and record all the sounds they hear, using the alphabet chart as needed.

READERS WORKSHOP

Unit 2: Reading Super Powers

Reading with Print Strategies and Sight Word Power

This unit is organized into 3 bends:

Bend I Using Super Powers to Look and Point, and Then Read Everything

In Bend I the students have been introduced to the idea that all readers have super powers to help & guide them while they are reading. We have been focusing on our "pointer power".

The children will be asked to activate their "pointer power" as they...

-read familiar texts

-use one-to-one matching

-tap each word, just once

-check that their reading makes sense

-point to words they know in a SNAP!

Bend II Taking on Even the Hardest Words

We are currently working in Bend II. In this bend the students will activate ALL of the super reading powers that they have learned thus far (pointer power, reread power, & partner power). These powers will be helpful as the students navigate how to take on even the hardest of words. They will learn that at times (just as true superheroes do) they will run into trouble with their reading. Things will get hard! But that they are TOUGH and have all the power within them to get the job done! The students will be introduced to picture power, snap word power, sound power, and persistence power. They will also explore how to turn more words into words they will know in a SNAP!
