WRITERS WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Session 5: The Power of Rereading

Today your students will write more stories, going back and forth between being writer and reader. As they reread, they’ll double check that they are doing everything they know to make their writing easy to read, like drawing pictures, writing letters, spaces, capital letters, and punctuation.

Unit 2 Session 5: Partner Power Gives Readers Even Stronger Pointer Power

Today your students will start by reading privately for 10-15 minutes. Then they will read 10-15 minutes with a partner, perhaps it is someone at home or a stuffed animal or another student. Partners will sit side-by-side, one book or poem or song will go in the middle, and they will take turns reading and pointing making sure to focus on making their pointing match what they are reading.

Unit 2 Session 14: Keep Your Collection Close, So You Can Grow, Study, and Use it

Today your kids will learn three new snap words (it, in, and an) as they perform a five-step process for turning any word into a snap word. Then, they’ll continue practicing their snap words. If they find a word they want to make a snap word, they’ll use the “How to Learn a Word” process to turn it into a snap word.

Unit 2 Session 6: Checklists Can Help Writers Make Powerful Stories

Today your writers will take stock of their writing, using either the “How to Write a True Story” chart or the “What Makes Writing Easy to Read?” chart as a checklist, thinking, “Did I do that?” and then fixing up parts based on what they found out. Some writers might also start new pieces today once they have revised past pieces.

Unit 2 Session 6: Super Readers Put Powers Together

Today your students will again read independently and then with (or to) a partner. As they are reading, they will need to make sure that when they get stuck or into some trouble they use ALL their strategies to help them get unstuck. Some strategies they will be using include: pointer power, reread power, partner power and picture power.

Unit 2 Session 15: Recognize Snap Words When the Font is Different

Today your kids will study and read snap words in different cases and fonts together. Students will notice how capital and lowercase letters, size, and different fonts do not change how they read the snap word. Then, they’ll go on a scavenger hunt for snap words in books or around their home or neighborhood. They will read all the snap words they find, even the ones that look a little different.

Unit 2 Session 7: A Vowel Chart Can Help with the Middles of Words

Today your students will keep working on their true stories, either drafting new pieces or revising, thinking specifically about vowels. They will use a vowel chart to help as they go through their writing, stretching out words, and making sure they have a vowel in every single word—often in the middle.

Unit 2 Session 7: Super Readers Learn Words and Practice Reading Them in a “Snap!”

Today your students will spend time reading but also spend time studying some new words they see often inside their books or songs or poems. They will work hard to learn new words as they read by using the “How to Learn a Word” process from the mini-lesson.
•Study the Word
•Spell the Word
•Write the Word
•Use the Word

Unit 2 Session 16: Interactive Writing

Today your kids will help compose a class letter inviting their stuffed animals to attend “Word School.” Then, they’ll prepare for “Word School” by choosing a final writing piece that they want to share with their stuffed animal (or action figure or invited guest). They’ll practice reading the piece, and they’ll make sure they have enough letters and sounds on the page that someone else can read the piece.

Reading with Print Strategies and Sight Word Power

This unit is organized into 3 bends:

Bend I Using Super Powers to Look and Point, and Then Read Everything

In Bend I the students have been introduced to the idea that all readers have super powers to help & guide them while they are reading. We have been focusing on our "pointer power".

The children will be asked to activate their "pointer power" as they...

-use one-to-one matching

-tap each word, just once

-check that their reading makes sense

-point to words they know in a SNAP!

Bend II Taking on Even the Hardest Words

We are currently working in Bend II. In this bend the students will activate ALL of the super reading powers that they have learned thus far (pointer power, reread power, & partner power). These powers will be helpful as the students navigate how to take on even the hardest of words. They will learn that at times (just as true superheroes do) they will run into trouble with their reading. Things will get hard! But that they are TOUGH and have all the power within them to get the job done! The students will be introduced to picture power, snap word power, sound power, and persistence power. They will also explore how to turn more words into words they will know in a SNAP!

Bend III Bringing Books to Life

MATH

Eureka Module 2: Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Shapes

In Module 2, students learn to correctly name 2D and 3D shapes regardless of their orientation, size, or variation. Kindergarten students will transition from classifying and identifying shapes by how they look (e.g., “It’s a rectangle because it looks like a door.”) to more precise descriptions based on mathematical attributes (e.g., “It’s a rectangle because it has four straight sides and no openings.”).

Introduced Terms

• Above, below, beside, in front of, next to, behind (position words)
• Circle
• Cone (solid shape)
• Cube (solid shape)
• Cylinder (solid shape)
• Face (flat side of a solid)
• Flat (two-dimensional shape)
• Hexagon (flat figure enclosed by six straight sides)
• Rectangle (flat figure enclosed by four straight sides)
• Solid (three-dimensional shape)
• Sphere (solid shape)
• Square (flat figure enclosed by four straight, equal sides)
• Triangle (flat figure enclosed by three straight sides)

WORD WORK

Unit 2: Word Scientists

There are three primary goals for the children in this unit: letter knowledge and letter-sound correspondence, phonological awareness, and high frequency words.

WE ARE KINDERGARTEN WORD SCIENTISTS!

Bend I Studying the Alphabet and the Alphabet Chart

We are currently studying Bend 1 of this unit. The children are studying the alphabet linking chart while noting keywords and their corresponding letters. They will examine upper and lowercase letters, and share their observations. They will practice the alphabetic principle, where they will connect and grow their letter-sound knowledge. We will explore more in-depth with letter formation and the differentiation between upper and lowercase letters. Lastly, the children will investigate the alphabet chart by discussing the similarities and differences that they discover, and even design their very own!

Bend III Studying and Using High-Frequency Words to Write and Read
