They’ll come up with an idea of something that they know how to do, and then will write the steps, thinking about the model that they saw in the session. They’ll likely number their steps and keep their writing fairly to the point, similar to the model.

Then, they will make a reading plan, stacking them in order from easiest to hardest and then reading down their stack. If students are reading digitally, they might make a plan of a few books they’ll read and the order they’ll read them in.

READERS WORKSHOP

Unit 3: Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles!

In this unit, students will discover that just as they are growing as people, they are also growing as READERS! Kindergarten readers will be tackling harder and harder books, and they'll need to grow bigger reading muscles to read those books. Kindergarteners will continue to channel all of the reading super powers we learned in the previous unit, to help them read bigger books. They will also be introduced to a very important new reading super power- Pattern Power! Children will learn to find the patterns, as well as, the pattern breaks in their books. Kindergarten readers will learn to check their reading by thinking, "Did that make sense? Did that sound right?" In the following bend, student learning will focus on using sound- symbol relationships, or "sound power," in order to help them solve tricky words in their reading. By the end of the unit, Kindergarteners will become stronger readers, with bigger reading muscles!

Module 3: Comparison of Length, Weight, Capacity, and Numbers to 10

In Module 3, Kindergarteners learn to compare and analyze length, weight, capacity, and finally numbers. Students use language such as:

  • longer than, shorter than, as long as
  • heavier than, lighter than, as heavy as
  • more than, less than, the same as

WORD WORK

Unit 3: Word- Part Power!

Bend I: Writing Power

In this bend, students will be moving from writing labels, to writing sentences. Kindergarteners will learn to write all of the sounds they hear in a word. Students will learn to say the word slowly, segmenting the words in phonemes.

Bend II: Word- Part Power

In this bend, students will learn about a NEW super power called, Word- Part Power! Students will work on blending onsets (initial consonant) and rimes (the string of letters that follow the consonant, in this unit, consisting of a vowel and another consonant, such as at, in, it, and an).

Bend III: Word Parts, Snap Words, and Digraphs

In the final bend, students will further expand their Word- Part Power by adding in a few more of the most common VC (vowel-consonant) phonograms (rimes). Children will learn all three ways to read words- by sight, by decoding, and by analogy. Kindergarteners will continue to build up their collection of snap words. Lastly, students will be introduced to digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch). Kindergarteners will discover that they can combine digraphs with word parts to make even more words!
