What we're doing in class

For the rest of the school year....

I am hoping that the weather will be sunny and bright and we can go outside and SING!  I would like to work on Patriotic songs about America and other fun songs and movement games.  We will participate in some special "Found Sound" activities, including a nature sounds scavenger hunt outside by the playground area.  We will also review our rhythm and solfeg as we prepare for second grade!  Looking forward to a strong finish to the end of this school year!

Week of may 3 - 7, 2021

Welcome Back!  This week we will be exploring sound.  Is sound music?  What are the sounds we hear everyday?  Is this music? We will be creating sound effects and sound stories!

Week of April 19 - 23, 2021

This week we will play some computer games to review tempo, dynamics and pitch. We will also end our unit on instruments with a video, "The Remarkable Farkel McBride", a favorite story about a boy trying to decide which instrument to play!  Have a nice vacation!

Week of April 12 - 16, 2021

All classes will continue learning about instruments through a variety of activities.

Week of April 5 - 9, 2021

This week we will continue learning about the instrument families.  We will do some matching, and sorting of instrument families.  We will also make an instrument flip book.  Fisk Students will be remote.  Please follow the remote lesson on this libguide.

Week of March 29 - April 2, 2021

Last week we were introduced to the instrument families of the orchestra.  We listened and responded to how each instrument sounded.  This week we will review the families and do another listening activity. If time, we will play a matching game on the computer to identify the instruments and their sound qualities.

Week of March 22 - 26, 2021

This week we will begin learning about the instruments of the orchestra and the musical families they belong to. We will connect this information to what we learned about timbre.

Week of March 15 - 19, 2021

This week we will read the Story "Mmmm... Cookie" and add hand-held percussion instruments to add some timbre (tone color) to our story.  Timbre or tone color are sounds or music that create emotions and help us express our feelings through music.

Week of March 8 - 12, 2021

We will continue to explore TIMBRE this week  listening to a sound story and then creating our own sound stories. We will also explore high and low pitches.

Week of March 1 - 5, 2021

Welcome back!  This week we are going to begin learning about TIMBRE which is the unique qualitiy of sounds and music and how they make us feel.

Week of Feb. 15 - 19, 2021

This week we will review rhythmic beats and start learning about the music elevator (the music scale) and how it relates to pitches in music.

Week of Feb. 8  - 12, 2021

This week we will continue to explore music using hand-held percussion instruments.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Week of Feb. 1 - 5, 2021

This week we will be playing more rhythm instruments and using body percussion to focus on steady beat and reading rhythms.

Week of Jan. 25 - 29, 2021

This week we will continue working on our rhythm compositions with hopes to perform them soon!

Week of Jan. 18 - 22, 2021

At Fisk, this week both first grades will have music together in the gym.  We will sit in chairs 6 feet away from each other.  We will have the chance to sing (which we really cannot do much of during music class due to special Covid rules). We will also do some fun movement activities and try to use some rhythm patterns we have learned to create a piece of music.  Hopefully next week in our individual music classes, we can edit our pieces and then try to play them on hand-held percussion instruments. There are no first grade music classes twith Mrs. Moldoff this week at Barron.

Week of Jan. 11 - 15, 2021

Happy New Year!  This week we will be reviewing rhythm recognizing whether the rhythm is a steady beat or basic rhythm patterns that help to make a song.  We will be reading rhythmic patterns and we also have a lot of movement activities that will keep us busy and active!

Weeks of Nov. 30 - Dec. 23, 2020

For the next 3 weeks, we will continue working on both dynamics and tempo.  We will be creating, responding, connecting and performing using our dynamics and tempo.  Happy Holidays!

Week of Nov. 16 - 24, 2020

This next week and a half we will be combining our dynamics with rhythm.  We will be creating rhythms from our flashcards and clapping the patterns in loud and soft volumes.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Week of Nov. 9 - 13, 2020

This week we will continue learning about dynamics.  We have learned two new music words - Piano means soft and Forte means loud.  Did you know that one of the first names for the piano (instrument) was the "Piano Forte" - the instrument that plays loud and soft!

Week of Nov. 3 - 6, 2020

We never did move onto Dynamics last week.  We had so much fun with our Halloween activities and playing our rhythm sticks.  This week we will definitely begin Dynamics!  There is just so much to learn!!!!

Week of Oct. 26 - 30, 2020

This week we will finish our work with tempo and move onto dynamics (the volume of the music) and how it is used in music.  We will also review many of our movement activities as it is the week before Halloween and I'm sure we will all have a lot of energy!  Happy Haunting Halloween!

Week of Oct. 19 -23, 2020

We have so many activities for exploring presto and largo tempos in music.  We will continue reflecting and responding to various pieces of music.  We will also continue playing our rhythm sticks.  We had so much fun last week!

Week of Oct. 12 - 16, 2020

This week we will continue exploring Presto and Largo tempos in music. We will also practice keeping a steady beat using rhythm sticks playing patterns to various songs and music.

Week of Oct. 5 - 9, 2020

This week we will make rhythm flashcards so we can create our own beat patterns.  We are continuing to develop a sense of a steady beat with our clapping and patching activities. We will also continue explore fast and slow tempos (presto/largo) through listening.  We will decide how different tempos (speed of the music) make us feel.  We will move to a variety of music with different tempos.  Sometimes it feels like we are having and extra physical education class in music with all our movement activities!  Happy Fall, enjoy the beautiful foliage!

Week of Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2020

This week we will continue practicing keeping a steady beat.  Last week, I introduced some music notes with their rhythmic note values.  You may hear your child reciting "Du Du Du-de Du"  They are practicing their rhythmic beats! I will also introduce the music concept "Tempo" - the speed of music. We will talk about fast and slow beats and music, in addition to many movement activities. Eventually we will refer to fast and slow by their music names:  Presto and Largo.

Week of Sept. 21 - 25, 2020

This week we will learn a new rhythm game called "Pop Up".  We will continue practicing steady beats in rhythm with Zoodio, Johnny Works With One Hammer, and also patching activities - tapping on parts of our bodies (head, shoulders, knees).  We will move to Alligator in the Elevator and the Color Song.

Week of Sept. 10 - 14, 2020

This week we will continue to get to know each other listening to different types of music and talking about how they make us feel.  We will also begin some rhythm activities.

Week of Sept. 2 - 11, 2020

This week we will do activities to get to know each other and begin to build our First Grade Music Community.
