Kristina Stevenson's Classroom: About 2nd Grade

Newsletter/Blog

Curriculum

For academics, we will have a Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop every day.  Each workshop is made up of a short focus lesson, followed by plenty of independent practice time and ending with a wrap-up and share time.  My goal with this format is to have students working independently on a wide variety of literacy activities, while I provide individualized instruction that targets each child’s unique strengths and areas of need.  We are also using a Phonics curriculum that is tied to our Reading and Writing units.  We will use poetry, songs, many visuals, (and a dragon friend named Gus) to become expert word solvers!  We will be using a Math curriculum called Eureka Math.  Each lesson provides plenty of opportunities to solve problems and practice skills in concrete ways.

Communication

Please do not hesitate to contact me ANY TIME you have questions or concerns.  You can reach me by email at kristina.stevenson@sau57.org. I will use the REMIND app for class announcements and communication – more information on this will be coming shortly.

I am looking forward to a terrific year!

You can follow classroom happenings on my district Teacher Page at www.sau57.org/stevenson. I will update the parent communication monthly.

What to Bring...

Snack & Water Bottles: I will give the children a 10-minute break each afternoon.  Please send one healthy snack for this time.  Students should bring a labeled water bottle to school.

Chromebooks:  This year, like last year, your student will be assigned a Chromebook. This computer will come home every day in a carrying case.  Please be sure computers are charged when you send them back to school in the morning because we will use them throughout the day.  This year students will be provided with headphones from the school, however your child is more than welcome to bring in their own.

Homework

Homework information will be sent out in a few weeks and we will talk more about this at Open House. The goal of homework is to reinforce concepts learned at school by providing practice at home, as well as to encourage responsibility in taking homework home and bringing it back to school.  Homework should not take more than 20 minutes, at most.
