WRITERS WORKSHOP

Unit 2 Session 8: Writing Readable Stories Using Word Walls

Today your students will look back over their writing from before, seeing if they’ve used certain words a lot and marking them. Then, they might work with a family member to add them to their personal word wall. They can then use this tool as they write a new true story and work to write snap words quickly.

Unit 2 Session 8: Super Readers Make the First Sound in the Word to Help Them Read the Word

Today your students will head off to do some independent and partner reading really focusing on using more than one superpower at a time when they get stuck on a word. They can not only use their picture power but they can also look closely at the letters in the word and think about the sounds they make to figure out what the word is. If you have an ABC chart handy, this will be a helpful tool for students to have out as they are reading just in case they need a little sound power support!

Unit 2 Session 17: Making Lesson Plans

Today your kids will make plans for teaching others the snap words they have learned. Students will choose the snap words they want to teach, and then review favorite snap word games and songs, so they are prepared to teach the snap words they know in the next session.

Unit 2 Session 9: Writing Stories with True Words: Making Stories Talk

Today your students will work on a new true story. They’ll storytell their story first to a writing partner, someone at home, or a stuffed animal using as many special words as they can, and then will work to include those exact words in their writing. Some words will likely be misspelled as they attempt new storytelling words that show off their writers’ voice.

Unit 2 Session 9: Super Readers Don’t Give Up!

Today your students will again go off to read lots of different texts using their super powers. Today, however, they should feel like they have everything they need to be persistent when solving tricky parts when they are reading independently and with or to a partner. Today readers will know not to give up when one power doesn’t work and will draw on their other powers to help them power through the hard parts.

WORD WORK

Unit 2 Session 18: Word School

This session is left open for teachers/parents so that you can celebrate by inviting students to teach someone (a stuffed animal, an action figure, a person) the snap words they’ve learned. This builds off of the work students did in Session 17.

Unit 2 Session 10: Using Reading Partnerships to Support More Conventional Writing

Today your students will work with a partner, whether virtual or face to face, to reread their writing. They will use their tools, like their pen to point to each word as they read. Then, their partner will help them fix things up using other tools, like the personal word wall for snap words.

Unit 2 Session 10: Celebration: Readers Show Off Their Powers

Today before your students head off to do independent and partner reading time they will think hard about the powers they use all the time and the ones they need to power up. They will set a goal to work on while they are reading today. They will practice this goal in lots of kinds of texts across their reading time.

READERS WORKSHOP

Unit 2: Reading Super Powers

Reading with Print Strategies and Sight Word Power

This unit is organized into 3 bends:

Bend I Using Super Powers to Look and Point, and Then Read Everything

In Bend I the students have been introduced to the idea that all readers have super powers to help & guide them while they are reading. We have been focusing on our "pointer power".

The children will be asked to activate their "pointer power" as they...

-read familiar texts

-use one-to-one matching

-tap each word, just once

-check that their reading makes sense

-point to words they know in a SNAP!

Bend II Taking on Even the Hardest Words

We are currently working in Bend II. In this bend the students will activate ALL of the super reading powers that they have learned thus far (pointer power, reread power, & partner power). These powers will be helpful as the students navigate how to take on even the hardest of words. They will learn that at times (just as true superheroes do) they will run into trouble with their reading. Things will get hard! But that they are TOUGH and have all the power within them to get the job done! The students will be introduced to picture power, snap word power, sound power, and persistence power. They will also explore how to turn more words into words they will know in a SNAP!

MATH

Eureka Module 2: Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Shapes

In Module 2, students learn to correctly name 2D and 3D shapes regardless of their orientation, size, or variation. Kindergarten students will transition from classifying and identifying shapes by how they look (e.g., “It’s a rectangle because it looks like a door.”) to more precise descriptions based on mathematical attributes (e.g., “It’s a rectangle because it has four straight sides and no openings.”).

 Introduced Terms

  • Above, below, beside, in front of, next to, behind (position words)
  • Circle
  • Cone (solid shape)
  • Cube (solid shape)
  • Cylinder (solid shape)
  • Face (flat side of a solid)
  • Flat (two-dimensional shape)
  • Hexagon (flat figure enclosed by six straight sides)
  • Rectangle (flat figure enclosed by four straight sides)
  • Solid (three-dimensional shape)
  • Sphere (solid shape)
  • Square (flat figure enclosed by four straight, equal sides)
  • Triangle (flat figure enclosed by three straight sides)

WORD WORK

Unit 2: Word Scientists

There are three primary goals for the children in this unit: letter knowledge and letter-sound correspondence, phonological awareness, and high frequency words.

WE ARE KINDERGARTEN WORD SCIENTISTS!

Bend I Studying the Alphabet and the Alphabet Chart

We are currently studying Bend 1 of this unit. The children are studying the alphabet linking chart while noting keywords and their corresponding letters. They will examine upper and lowercase letters, and share their observations. They will practice the alphabetic principle, where they will connect and grow their letter-sound knowledge. We will explore more in-depth with letter formation and the differentiation between upper and lowercase letters. Lastly, the children will investigate the alphabet chart by discussing the similarities and differences that they discover, and even design their very own!
