Writers Workshop: Unit  2 Session 6 Checklists can help writers make powerful stories. 

Objective: Writers will use tools to help them write the best they can. One of the tools is a checklist. This may seem like a simple thing, but writers know that checklists can help them make their writing the best it can be. Have your child use the checklist below to check their true story writing.

Word Study: Session #6

Adding pictures to the alphabet chart. Teach students that word scientists notice when something can be improved, and they invent solutions to make it better. 

Print out the alphabet chart for your child. Give them small stickys and have them come up with replacement pictures for the chart. For example instead of "rat" for R they could draw a picture of a "rabbit".

Lesson Objective: Compare lengths using taller than and shorter than with aligned and non aligned end points.

Reader's Workshop: 

Session 4: Readers use snap words to anchor their pointer power. I want to teach you another trick to make your pointer power even stronger. When you see a word that you know in a snap, it helps you keep track of the right words as you read, and they help you fix your pointer power.

Students will be introduced to the sight word "this". Students will read and highlight the word "this" and read the story A Fireman

Writer's Workshop Session 7. Vowel Charts

 Objective: Students will learn that a vowel chart can help with the middles of words. Vowels can help spell the middles of words. If you know just a few tips about how vowels work, this can make your writing so much easier to read. A vowel chart can help you hear the vowel sound and come up with the right vowel to put on your paper.

Reader's Workshop: Session 5: Partner power gives readers even stronger pointer power.

Objective: Children will learn that partners can help make your reading even stronger. You can work with a partner to practice pointing to words as you read them. One partner reads, and the other partner points to each word. Both of you can check that one word makes one point. This way you double your pointer power.

Word Study:

Sight Word Poem:  Review sight word "this".  Find the Poem I See This HERE. 

Readers Workshop 6: Super readers put powers together.

Objective: When you are reading and you encounter trouble, that's the time when you especially need to activate your super powers. You can't let yourself get defeated! Instead call on MORE powers. Keep using pointer power, but also picture power.

Word Study:  Phonics Session 7: Using the alphabet chart with increasing automaticity. To find a letter to write a word, students need to say and hear the sound in the word and quickly find the letter on the chart, checking to make sure that the letter matches the sound. Print out alphabet chart and initial sound cards. Have your child pick a card and identify where that card would go on the alphabet chart. They will listen for the initial/beginning sound. They are working to locate that sound quickly.
