Word Building: Students will build words with the -ock word family.

Cut apart letters and build new words then write the words on the additional sheet. Write a sentence on the back using one of the words you created.

Reader's Unit 4 Session 16 Readers bring out a poem's meaning and feeling.

It's really important when you read a poem to think about the feeling of the poem. Avid poetry readers think about how a poem makes them feel, and then they make their voices match that feeling.

Today students will continue to read familiar songs and poems for about 15 minutes. As they do this, they’ll hone in on the feeling of the poem and reread in order to make their voice match that feeling.

Word Study:  Session 18 Flexibility with vowel power, word part power, snap word power in writing.

Objective: Writers are flexible! They speed up or slow down, and use the powers they need, to write even the biggest words as best they can.

Today your students will write a “How to Graduate” book for Mabel. As they engage in interactive writing, they’ll practice slowing down and speeding up as needed when writing, employing their sound power, word-part power, and snap word power.

Readers Workshop:  Readers Unit 4 Session 17 Becoming a Copycat Poet

Objective: When you find a poem you really love, you can fall in love with it even more by becoming a copycat poet, copying the rhythm and the rhyme and creating your own new poems.

Today your students will begin by rereading familiar songs and poems and choosing one that is a favorite. Once they’ve chosen, they’ll use the rhythm and beat to create their own copy-cat poem.

Word Study: Phonics Unit 4 Session 19

Objective: Mabel's graduation and celebration of vowel power. Writers keep their vowel power activated all the time, always on the lookout for vowels in their writing. Now and forever, they can check that every syllable of every word has at least one vowel. Students will parade around the classroom in their graduation hats with Mabel to celebrate all they have accomplished with vowels! 

 

Preparing for a Celebration of Vowel Power

Today your students will use their vowel power and other super powers to write celebratory signs for Mabel’s graduation.
