The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.
As I write this letter I am struck by first, how fast the summer went, and second, how quickly one acclimates to their new surroundings. I would typically start my welcome back letter listing the new staff in the building, but this year I have chosen to attach the entire staff list because we are melding staff from all elementary schools in Salem along with staff members new to the Salem School District. I hope you find this list helpful.
I thought I would start by telling you a little about myself, and will use as a base the book that I asked the Barron staff to read this summer, Tom Rath’s Strengths Finder 2.0. My number one strength is positivity. The book characterizes this strength by saying, “…quick with a smile, and always on the lookout for the positive in the situation. Somehow you can’t quite escape your conviction that it is good to be alive, that work can be fun, and that no matter what the setbacks, one must never lose one’s sense of humor. Though you see the good in virtually every situation, you still recognize challenges, and communicate the reason for your optimism.” This is where I want to jump into my message. The Salem School District, along with the Barron community, has undergone a major transition period with the closing of a school and the realignment of students. We are starting a new school year bringing together families and staff from around the district. While I acknowledge the change, I view it as an exciting moment in time for Salem. I can’t wait to celebrate our new school community. The challenges are opportunities for us. I know we will work through these challenges to become stronger and to build toward future success. Like with any new relationship, however, we are going to have to figure some things out together…I just ask for your patience and support, especially this fall as we embrace all of the changes. Some things might not be the same as they have been in the past and I believe that this is part of the change process. Please know that the staff and I will always fall back on decisions and structures based on what we believe are best for kids. With this philosophy, I feel we are always on the right path to building a positive, and student centered school community.
I look forward to getting to know you and your child(ren) this year. The class lists will be posted on the front doors Friday the 21st at 3:00 p.m. I hope to meet many of you during the Back to School Ice Cream Gathering Monday, August 24th from 5:30 to 6:30 sponsored by the PTA.
