TikTok - An Example of Why Data Privacy is Important

With the steady rocketing rise of TikTok, and its use by a vast horde of the United State's youth, yet another shiny new application raises the question of data privacy and student protection.  When downloading an application, creating an account, or simply signing in with social media, a user agrees to everything that the company lists in their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Although this is a necessary agreement to use an application, and one that is widespread, few point out the devil in the details as blatantly as TikTok. As you dive deeper into what users are giving away with TikTok, hopefully this example will have you question what other applications you are using...and what they might be collecting, sharing, and selling.

Flipgrid & Data Privacy

Flipgrid is a great application and a nice alternative to TikTok, but it remains to be seen whether they will sign the NH data privacy agreement.  This means when utilizing Flipgrid with students, the following process should be followed.

  • Don’t have students sign in to Flipgrid with their Google accounts

  • Use a class code with teacher-created student IDs instead

  • Students can then complete activities without linking their data

Application Approval Reminders

Incorporating New Technology Applications into the Classroom

A quick reminder of the process of technology integration: please follow the procedure below before introducing applications or online services for student use (either in school or outside of the school day).

While student interest and engagement are applicable factors, we also need to consider:

  • How does it enhance student learning?

  • Does it align with district standards and goals?

  • Does it protect student data, meeting legal requirements?

  • Is it the correct tool for the job?

After you ask yourself these essential questions, follow the protocol below: 

  1. Contact Eric Bird (Woodbury/SHS) or Amy Chatrain (Elementary/SHS). We may already have a tool that is approved and could meet your needs.

  2. If the new application/service meets certain criteria, it then requires approval by administration.

  3. The company that created the application has to sign a NH data privacy agreement if deemed necessary.

  4. Moving forward often entails a specific process of further protecting students when setting up accounts - Eric or Amy can help.

Frontline Access

If you can access Frontline services, My Learning Plan and Aesop, from your district issued laptop, but you cannot from your mobile device, it is most likely that you are logged into a personal Google or Gmail account on your device.

The SSD uses Single Sign On through Google to access all Frontline services. This requires that you must be signed into your SSD Google Account. Click on the tabs for video directions to learn how to properly access and log into Frontline from your Laptop/Computer and/or Mobile Device.

** NOTE: The Frontline App (IOS and Android) ONLY gains access to AESOP. You will NOT be able to access MLP from the Frontline App. To access all Frontline services from your mobile device, use the link provided at:
