Matthews College Prep Chem: Molecular Compounds

Molecular Compounds

See chapters 8 & 9 of the book.

Learning Targets

  1. Use the periodic table to determine the number of valance electrons an element has.
  2. Determine whether or not a compound is ionic or covalent, given the formula or the name.
  3. Distinguish between properties of ionic compounds and molecular compounds (i.e. melting point, solubility, & conductivity).
  4. List the 7 diatomic elements.
  5. Draw a Lewis Dot Diagram of an element, compound, or ion that may have single, double or triple bonds.
  6. Determine if an element breaks the octet rule.
  7. Name covalent compounds if given its formula.
  8. Write the chemical formula for a covalent compound if given its name.
