K-12 Performing Arts Philosophy

           

Performing Arts education is an integral part of the academic, artistic, emotional, and social development of our students here in Salem.  As arts educators, we aim to provide our students with opportunities to express themselves both individually and collectively through the participation and performance in the arts.  Students will take part in reflective and analytical practices, which provide greater insight into historical, cultural, and individual perspectives.  In addition to this, our students will develop strong, interpersonal relationships with each other and within the development of themselves, preparing them to be empathetic and tolerant participants in society.  Participation and performance in the arts provide a means of developing one’s self and an appreciation of becoming more interconnected within the society in which we live.  
 

It is our objective as performing arts educators to provide a curricular framework for our students to experience this art form in a meaningful and enriching way, enabling them to express themselves and to appreciate music and theatre on a deeper and more intrinsic level.  Performing arts are an onramp to  both a collaborative and personal endeavor, which can be experienced on a myriad of levels.  Whether our students are performing within an ensemble or engaging in a hands-on and integrated artistic activity or thoughtfully reflecting upon artistic processes or performances, our objective is to expose them to practices that will enable inner growth and development.  These experiences serve as a catalyst for developing 21st Century Learning skills including higher-level and critical thinking as well as the development of problem solving skills, collaboration, and reflection.  It is through this process of creating that students are able to truly connect with the performing arts as both an art form and expressive outlet.   


Students that participate in the Performing Arts program in the Salem School District will be provided a well-rounded and comprehensive education that is filled with high quality and rigorous learning experiences in a safe environment to create and innovate, challenge themselves and take risks, and be self-expressive while also becoming literate musicians and theatrical artists.  The curriculum is vertically aligned and integrated with the National Core Arts Standards and the NH State Core Arts Competencies.  Students will be assessed based on their individual demonstration of skills at the appropriate level.  We are confident that our students will be given the tools necessary to develop as artists, as collaborators and as young adults whom will contribute as sophisticated, versatile, and creative purveyors and participants in our greater society.  Our graduates will embrace the life skills necessary to be confident and tolerant collaborators in all aspects of their lives.

  • A curricular framework that is comprehensive and appropriately challenging where students are encouraged to take risks, think critically, and able to transfer their learning and knowledge in a variety of musical and performing arts experiences.

  • Empathy, tolerance, and the exploration of multiple perspectives.

  • Innovation and creativity in the learning and performance process.

  • Providing a learning environment that encourages growth, progress, and the ability to take risks.

 

Beliefs

 

We believe:

  • That our performing arts programs educate the entire child in order to be positive contributors to society once they leave the Salem School District.

  • Solid social and emotional connections to learning and the learning environment provide a strong foundation for meaningful and impactful musical experiences to take place.

  • The National Core Arts Standards provide a lense through which we develop and implement meaningful and long-lasting experiences for our students.

  • In high academic and social expectations for our students.

  • A scaffolded and spiral-based curriculum enables students to build upon previously learned skills in order to be successful at the next juncture of their performing arts education.

 

Student Learning Expectations

 

Our students will be able to effectively:

  • Demonstrate a high level of musical skill and aptitude in order to be successful at the next level of musical performance and for their own personal enjoyment.

  • Transfer the skills learned through the music-making and performing process for the purpose of more in-depth performance and appreciation of the performing arts.

  • Consume music with an open and tolerant mind and for both enjoyment and intellectual stimulation.

  • Reflect and analyze music and theatre for both a deeper and more meaningful appreciation of this art form

  • Continue to be life-long learners and lovers of performing arts.

  • Perform independently and collaboratively with others.
