Soule School - A dynamic learning community where staff, parents, students, and community members work together to provide an environment where every child can grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We recognize and celebrate the diversity of our school community and believe whole-heartedly that it is a strength for us, a strength that springboards every goal we set and every action we take. We are the Soule School Sharks!
High expectation - We convey to Soule School students that they are expected to engage in rigorous, challenging and high quality work. We also demand this of ourselves. In order to meet the needs of every student, the staff at Soule School participate in a variety of professional development offerings before and after school, during Assessment Instructional Meetings (AIM), staff meetings, and during early release/delayed openings. Our skills continue to evolve as we focus on the use of multiple data points to form flexible student groups, and look at a variety of ways to infuse technology in the learning process.
Arts Education - What happens when you put together twelve dedicated staff members, twenty one talented students, and eight weeks of rehearsals? You end up with a top-notch, arts integrated, musical production! The process to produce Off Their Rockers began with staff members who are musical enthusiasts and wanted to bring the thrill of performing in a show to our students. Once the cast was announced the rehearsals began. Twenty-one additional students stayed after school to create the scenery that enabled the show to take place at the Soule Senior Center. On February 18, Soulemate Productions performed Off Their Rockers, our first school musical. The tradition will continue in 2017 with our production of Pirates! The Musical.
Reading, writing, and mathematics - The students of Soule School participate in the workshop model to receive their instruction in reading, writing and mathematics. Envisions Math and Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study are resources that teachers use to instruct students. In addition, we have a number of web based programs that we employ. Introduced this year, Typing Agent is a program used to teach keyboarding skills. ST Math, created by MIND Research Institute, is game-based instructional software for K-12 and is designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. At Soule School we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated Title 1 teachers who provide targeted 30 minute daily instruction in reading to students whose skills are below grade level. The work done by this amazing team has been instrumental in students reaching their personal reading goals.
Kindness – In the classrooms, through the hallways and intertwined throughout the entire Soule School community there is a sense of kindness and generosity that is palpable. Our students are graciously offered health related services by Salem Dental Collaborative, Spindel Eye Associates and Convenient MD. Students from Salem High School visit us once a week to support our after-school Homework Club. We partner with Salem’s Boys and Girls Club to offer a school based program for our students. Our PTA members work diligently throughout the year to provide cultural and family events. This year, through the generous donations of parents and staff we were able to provide fifteen Soule families with a Thanksgiving Dinner Basket. Further, the holiday spirit was strong when our school community came together and purchased gifts for the children in eighteen Soule families from our annual Giving Tree.
Salem Pride – The five elementary schools in Salem, thou different, are bound together by common treads. We work together to plan professional development opportunities and make curriculum decisions. Our students sing together during Salem’s Night of Lights and then compete against each other during our annual Dodgeball Game. We share resources, strategies, and staff. We are the Soule School Sharks and along with North Salem, Lancaster, Barron and Fisk Schools, we are Salem Pride!
