Engineering Magnetic Doggy Doors
For students completing grades 3-5 in June 2025
Adapted from the Boston Museum of Science's YES to Engineering Curriculum, in this hands-on engineering unit, students will work in teams and use the Engineering Design Process to design a magnetic door system for a dog shelter. The door system must allow shelter dogs (who wear magnets on their collars) into the kennel but prevent other animals from entering. Using their knowledge of magnetic attraction and repulsion, students will imagine, plan, and create unique solutions to the problem. They will test and improve their designs, then share their engineering work with the class. Bring a snack and water bottle.
