Summer Reading: Novel in Verse

Essential Questions:

How does one’s identity change/evolve in the face of injustice?

To what extent can art become an act of resistance?

How can art become a response to trauma?

For your summer reading, you will be choosing one of the following contemporary novels in verse:

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam (2020)

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (2018)

Behind These Hands by Linda Vigen Phillips (2018)

The school will also have some print copies, but you are welcome to purchase your own.  While you may choose to read along with an audiobook, please seek out a print copy (use page numbers) so that you may view visuals and cite quotations accurately.
