Adult High School Diploma Program
The Adult High School Diploma Program offers classes to earn credits to complete adult high school requirements and earn a diploma. Students must be ages 16 and older and live or work in N.H to register for an Adult Diploma class with Salem Continuing Education. New students will be asked to provide a transcript for review and meet with the Director to create a plan for completing the required classes for graduation.
Winter/Spring 2026 Classes

This HiSET class helps students prepare for their high school equivalency exams by providing academic support and individualized attention. Class also prepares students for the required practice tests, and assists students with setting up an ETS account and registering for the official exam. Student enrollment is dependent on practice test schools. This is a school year class or until a student passes the HiSET exam.
Class meets Monday and Wednesday, 2:45-4:30 pm, begins January 5, 2026

In this course, we’ll analyze short stories from diverse literary movements and cultural perspectives. Students will examine how authors approached writing short stories, learn the craft elements of short fiction (plot, character, setting, point of view, theme), and develop critical reading and analytical writing skills. We will explore literary movements like realism, naturalism, modernism, Southern gothic, postmodernism, science fiction and more. Examples of short stories we will read may include “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Necklace,” “Miss Brill,” and “A Temporary Matter.” Students will be responsible for a final essay outside of class. Class is worth 1 English credit.

Consumer Math will apply math and algebraic reasoning to everyday, real-world scenarios involving money. We will discover valuable skills to make ourselves savvy and conscientious consumers in today’s global market. In this class, we will explore how money can shape our life. Students will learn about earning, saving, and spending so that they can make their money work for them. They will explore different career paths and education options as well as post-secondary expenses. We will make sense of taxes, insurance, and income. Topics may include: tax, tip, discount, checking and savings accounts, interest, loans, insurance, automobile expenses and housing expenses. Calculators will be used throughout the course. Students need to have completed Algebra 1. Class is worth 1 math credit.

This course will look into the introduction to the grand topic of economics. With this being a large topic, we will cover the basic concepts and principles that affect our everyday life. Starting with the definition of economics itself, we’ll explore supply and demand, markets/competition, opportunity cost, stocks, budgets, and more. We will learn to think like economists in hopes that we will leave this course with the new knowledge on how our town, community, country, and the world works through a financial perspective. Class is worth ½ economics credit.

This course explores American History from Colonialism through the Cold War. Students will study basic documents and concepts of American government, such as the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Other topics include the Civil War, Immigration, Civil Rights and the Cold War. Students will be asked to read related historical materials and write short reports or essays. Class is worth 1 social studies credit.

Class will pay special attention to the development of critical skills such as decision making, communication, collaboration, teamwork, independent learning, and organization. Students will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for how important language is to the world of literature and how it creates suspense. We will read And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, short stories from Sherlock Holmes, and excerpts from “A Night to Remember," "Cujo," and "Ten Days in a Mad-House." We’ll also look at poetry from Edgar Allen Poe, ballads used in Country music, and how media is used both on the small and big screens. Students will be responsible for a final essay outside of class. Class is worth 1 English credit.

Once you have met with the Director and created a plan for completing remaining credits, register for a class. There is a fee for classes, and a $45 one-time registration fee for new students.
A completed registration is required for all students. If students are taking multiple classes, only one registration is needed. Note: classes are open to New Hampshire residents/employees only.
